We Confess Our Sins and God Forgives Us

Call to Confession

Corporate Prayer of Confession

O Most  mighty God, and merciful Father, who hast compassion upon all men, and who wouldst not the death of  a sinner, but rather that he should turn from his sin, and be saved; Mercifully forgive us our trespasses; receive and comfort us, who are grieved and wearied with the burden of sins.  Thy property is always to have mercy; to thee only it appertaineth to forgive sins.  Spare us therefore, good Lord, spare thy people, whom thou hast redeemed; enter not into judgment with thy servants; but so turn thine anger from us, who meekly acknowledge our transgressions, and truly repent us of our faults, and so make haste to help us in this world, that we may ever live with thee in the world to come; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

All: ALMIGHTY God, who seest that we have no power of ourselves to help ourselves; Keep us both outwardly in our bodies, and inwardly in our souls; that we may be defended from all adversities which may happen to the body, and from all evil thoughts which may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ, our  Lord.  Amen

The church is an organism of humble, connected, and functioning parts.

I.                   V 3: (Humble) The church is an organism of humble parts.

a.      “For by the grace given to me…”, grace, the beginning of being humble.

c.      “think with sober judgment” (sophrovein, think in one’s right mind)

d.      the “measure of faith”

                                                              i.      Faith is God’s gift.

ii.      Faith has a common profession and a unique expression

II.                 Vv 4-5: (Connected) The church is an organism of connected parts.

a.      The church is compared to a physical body.

b.      Each part of our physical bodies has a unique function.

e.      Each Christian is connected to every other Christian.

III.              Vv 6-8: (Functioning) The church is an organism of functioning parts.

a.      Gifts are given to each believer.

                                                              i.      Eph. 2:8, faith is God’s gift.

ii.      Eph. 4:8, The Risen Lord gave gifts to His people.

b.      Gifts are meant to be used in the body, 1Cor. 12:7.

c.      The body of Christ has functioning parts:

                                                              i.      Prophecy, speaking God’s words requires believing God’s words.

                                                             ii.      Serving the body

                                                           iii.      Teaching the body

                                                          iv.      Exhorting/encouraging the body

                                                            v.      Providing financial support for the body

vi.      Leading the body with eagerness

vii.      Showing mercy with a happy spirit

Application: God’s gift of faith in Christ includes the means to be a functioning part of the Church. What is your function as a connected part of the body of Christ?
